The collection consists of records primarily relating to Richard Dauenhauer's activities as a poet and translator. Included are drafts of published and unpublished works, notes, correspondence, drafts of essays by Richard Dauenhauer and other writers, and other materials. There are also records relating to Richard Dauenhauer's Tlingit language and culture studies, and records concerning his work with the University of Alaska Instructional Telecommunications Consortium (UAITC).

Richard Dauenhauer received a B.A. in Russian and Slavic Languages from Syracuse University, an M.A. in German from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin. He studied in Finland under a Fulbright Fellowship in 1966 and 1967. He came to Alaska in the late 1960's to teach at Alaska Methodist University (now Alaska Pacific University), and also became involved in studies of the Tlingit Languages and oral tradition.
